Rui Matos believes that each one of his sculptures conceals a story, a fantastic tale whose outcome is beyond his reach, as its creator. He sets the tone, but once the work is completed, it remains incomplete. Therefore, usually his sculptures are incomplete stories recorded in limestone, slate, bronze or steel, in the precision and accuracy of a definite form. Their narratives escape a specific or direct reading. It must be every spectator, individually, to find the name, the reference and the memory that each sculpture has to offer.
Sometimes, as in the works of more recent series, Matos works the materials in the purely aesthetic field, the shapes and the colors, joining organic to geometric elements. Uses color to accentuate the obvious contrasts of shapes, concave-convex, interior-exterior, and relations of light and shade. |
